William Carter III's Charge to the 2026 Firelands Officers
May 8, 2026, Bellevue Lodge

Tonight is more than an installation. Tonight is a milestone.

Ten years ago, a group of determined and visionary Masons looked across this region and saw not simply what was… but what could be. They saw the possibility of a Valley that would not merely exist but would ignite. A Valley that would not simply confer degrees but would create experiences. A Valley that would not merely gather men together but would transform them.

And tonight, standing here ten years later, let me say clearly and without hesitation: You succeeded.

The Valley of the Firelands has become something extraordinary.

You built this Valley not because it was easy, but because you believed the Scottish Rite still mattered in the modern world. You believed that men were still searching for Light. You believed that symbolism still speaks. That ritual still transforms. That Brotherhood still heals. And perhaps most importantly, you believed that Masonry should never become passive or stale, but vibrant, immersive, and alive.

That belief has become the culture of this Valley.

History tells us that the ancient alchemists taught that fire was not merely destructive. Fire was transformative. It purified. It illuminated. It changed one substance into another. And how fitting that this Valley bears the name Firelands, because over the last decade this Valley has done exactly that: it has become a place of transformation.

Men entered seeking curiosity and found purpose.

And men entered seeking fellowship and found Brotherhood.

Men entered carrying the weight of the profane world and discovered that within these walls there was still mystery, beauty, wisdom, and wonder.

And Brethren, that does not happen accidentally.

It happens because officers labor tirelessly behind the scenes. It happens because members give not merely their time, but their passion. It happens because people in this Valley refused to settle for “good enough.”

You created unique experiences. Memorable ritual. Powerful education. Genuine fellowship. You understood something profound: that Freemasonry is not preserved by repetition alone. It is preserved by meaning. By giving men moments they will remember for the rest of their lives.

And now tonight, this line of officers steps forward. Brethren, never forget what you inherit.

You are not simply inheriting titles or stations. You are inheriting a living flame. A fire lit by visionary men ten years ago who dared to believe this Valley could become something remarkable.

Protect that flame. Feed it. And expand it. Because the world desperately needs what Scottish Rite Masonry offers.

You see, we live in an age overflowing with information but starving for wisdom. We’re connected digitally, yet isolated spiritually. We find ourselves surrounded by entertainment, yet hungry for meaning. And into that darkness, the Scottish Rite still whispers the same eternal truths it has carried for generations:

    • That man is more than appetite and ambition.
    • That wisdom must temper power, that tolerance is strength, and that Brotherhood is sacred.
    • And that the purpose of initiation is not simply to join something, but to become something.

This Valley understands that, and that is why it has flourished.

The Valley of the Firelands has become proof that when Masons commit themselves fully to excellence, creativity, and authentic Brotherhood, men respond. The Light grows brighter. The experience becomes unforgettable. And the Craft becomes not merely relevant, but irresistible.

So tonight, as these officers are installed, I ask every Brother in this room to remember: The first ten years were only the foundation. The next ten years are the ascent.

Imagine what this Valley can become if it continues to innovate. To inspire and educate. To welcome. To burn brightly with the Sacred Flame of the Rite.

Imagine young men entering these doors another ten years from now and saying: “There is something different here.”

And there will be.

Because they will feel the presence of men who cared enough to build something legendary.

Brethren of the Firelands, thank you for your vision. Thank you for your labor and your courage to build. And may it forever be said in the decades to come that in THIS Valley, the fire never dimmed because good men continued to tend the flame.

Congratulations to our officers installed this evening. Now go forth and continue to build something worthy of eternity.
